CFES works on behalf of Canadian earth scientists through Canadian National Committees working with the International Geoscience Programme (IGCP), the International Union of Geosciences (IUGS) and UNESCO Global Geoparks.

The CFES joint Canadian National Committees on the International Geoscience Programme (IGCP) and International Union of Geosciences (IUGS) are in place to:

  • Support Canadian-led proposals to the IGCP Scientific Board

  • Provide feedback on Canadian geoscience issues and priorities to IGCP, IUGS and UNESCO

  • Identify proposed IGCP projects of potential interest to Canada and to arrange for a leader to coordinate Canadian activities,

  • Act as the official liaison between IGCP, IUGS and Canadian geoscientists

  • Advise the IGCP and the IUGS to make these institutions more competitive in the current financial regime at UNESCO

  • Strategically position Canadian geoscience to optimize interactions with UNESCO and other organizations worldwide

Membership in these committees includes Canadian leaders and co-leaders of IGCP projects and the CFES Director of International Affairs.
